How I helped Humane Society International’s Fur Free Britain campaign show the horror of fur farming

For Humane Society International’s Fur Free Britain campaign, I produced a reactions film in which Chris Packham, Lucy Watson, Peter Egan and Pete Wicks watch fur farm footage over a video call.

01 The challenge

Show the horror without driving people away

Humane Society International wanted the public to understand what fur farming really involves. The footage that proves it is distressing, and distressing footage makes people look away, which defeats the point of the campaign.

02 The insight

Let the audience watch someone else watching

People can take in a horror second-hand that they would refuse to watch first-hand. A recognisable face reacting to the footage carries the emotion of the material without forcing the viewer to sit through it.

03 Strategy

Familiar faces, a familiar format

Primary objective: make fur farming impossible to ignore for a broad social audience, without distressing them into scrolling past.

We cast four people with their own audiences: Chris Packham, Lucy Watson, Peter Egan and Pete Wicks. We used the format everyone had just got used to, the conference call, so the film felt immediate rather than staged.

04 Execution

Footage shown, reactions intercut

Over a video call, we showed each of them fur farm footage and recorded their reactions, then intercut those reactions with the footage itself. The viewer sees enough of the farms to understand them, and sees the impact through faces they already trust.

05 Craft

Not pretty, on purpose

It isn’t a beautifully lit film, and it doesn’t need to be. The webcam look is part of the message: it uses the situation we had all become accustomed to, which makes the reactions read as real rather than produced.

06 Results

Widespread coverage and a top-performing video

The film received widespread media coverage and quickly became one of Humane Society International’s most watched social videos.

07 The closing line

Four faces did the hard part

Four famous faces and a video call let a mass audience feel the reality of fur farming without having to watch it, and made the film one of Humane Society International’s most watched.

Need people to face something difficult?

Reaction films, testimony and remote formats can carry a hard truth to an audience that would scroll past the raw footage.

If your campaign has evidence people find hard to watch, let’s work out how to get it seen.
