I'm Andrew Davies, a London-based director and DOP. For more than 20 years I've made charity films for Barnardo's, Compassion in World Farming and Dogs Trust that drive donations, inspire action and raise awareness.

Authenticity is the most important ingredient in charity video production. The audiences that charities and NGOs need to reach are sophisticated — they can tell within seconds whether a charity film or campaign film has been made to move people or made to tick a communications box. Getting it right means earning trust on both sides of the camera: from the people you're filming, and from the people who will watch.
I've spent more than 20 years making charity films for organisations including Barnardo's, Compassion in World Farming and Dogs Trust. This is not a sector I've added to a commercial reel — it's work I understand, care about, and approach with the close attention that trauma, lived experience and community trust require.
Emotionally engaging fundraising video consistently improves donation rates — by giving potential donors a direct, human connection to the cause they're being asked to support. A well-made charity film doesn't just tell people to give; it makes them feel why.
Awareness campaign videos raise visibility for urgent issues across social platforms, news media and parliamentary lobbying. Film is one of the most persuasive tools available when you need to shift opinion, not just inform it.
Educational video production trains staff, guides volunteers, orients new audiences to a cause, and explains how policies create real-world change — in a format people actually engage with. See also: training video production.
High-quality charity films increase audience confidence and strengthen institutional reputation. In a sector where trust is everything, the standard of your communications is inseparable from the credibility of your cause.
Optimised video supports search ranking and extends organic reach on social platforms — turning your campaigns into content that keeps working long after the initial launch.
Barnardo's wanted a visual campaign to change how people view working in a charity shop — a role that carries outdated associations that discourage exactly the volunteers the charity most needs. The brief was to make prospective volunteers see themselves in the role: engaged, purposeful, part of something that matters.
We made a social-first campaign film built around targeted personas — giving each audience segment a character they could identify with, in a context that felt genuine rather than aspirational. The film was distributed across Barnardo's national social channels and deployed as part of their volunteer recruitment drive across UK retail centres, directly supporting the charity's effort to attract a broader and younger volunteer base.
Attitude is Everything works to improve access to live music for Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people — both as audience members and as professionals working within the industry. Their Beyond the Music programme supports artists from those communities who often face structural barriers to being seen and heard in the sector.
The challenge was to make a film that demonstrated both the talent of the artists involved and the systemic argument Attitude is Everything was making to music industry employers. We worked closely with participants in the programme to capture their passion and performance ability — creating a film used in the organisation's industry presentations and funding applications, making the case for inclusive hiring directly to music industry decision-makers.

Not every production company that makes charity films understands the sector. The difference between a good charity film and a generic corporate video with a charity client is significant — in approach, in sensitivity, and in whether the result actually serves the cause.
| Area | My approach |
|---|---|
| Sector expertise | 20+ years with charities and NGOs as a specialism, not a sideline — this is the work I have always done |
| Tone and sensitivity | Trauma-informed, inclusive storytelling from pre-production through to edit, not managed reactively when it becomes a problem |
| Strategic alignment | Every film is tied to a measurable goal — a donation rate, a policy ask, a recruitment target — not just a creative brief |
| Client experience | Personal, collaborative and transparent throughout. One point of contact from first conversation to final delivery |
Costs vary significantly depending on scope, crew size and what the film needs to do. Here's a realistic market guide based on current UK rates, :
| Film type | Cost range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly social content day (6–8 videos) | £1,200–£1,600/mo | One fast shoot day on simple kit — staff interviews, calls to action, short-form social edits |
| Case study or impact video | £1,500–£4,500 | Interview-led story with one or two shoot days, basic lighting and audio, standard edit |
| Event coverage | From £99/hour | In-person event filming, edited for release the following day |
| Brand or campaign film | £6,000+ | Flagship content with full crew, extensive pre-production, broadcast-quality finish |
Most charity video projects take 4–6 weeks from brief to delivery. Faster turnarounds are possible depending on complexity and access to contributors.
Emotionally led stories with a clear, single call to action consistently outperform abstract or data-heavy films. Viewers give to people, not statistics — the most effective fundraising videos centre a real person whose situation the audience can connect with.
A campaign film aims to change something — behaviour, policy, a decision. An awareness video aims to build understanding and extend reach. Both are legitimate tools; which one you need depends on what success looks like for the project.
Yes. Scalable approaches prioritise the core message and the outcome rather than production complexity for its own sake. A case study or impact film can be produced from £1,500. The best charity films are often the simplest ones.
Absolutely — and many clients commission films specifically with that in mind. A well-structured impact film can serve simultaneously as public-facing content, a funder evidence asset and a donor communications tool.
